The Boulder lifestyle is probably the only part of the CU experience that makes it worth it. I'm an out of state computer science major, so obv it will vary for different departments, but the education I'm getting here doesn't seem particularly amazing when compared to the price. The problem specifically with out of state is mainly the cost. Believe me, even paying in-state tuition is enough to make me consider transferring somewhere else for cheaper. You can go to a state school that's in your state and pay a fourth of what you would pay by going to CU as an out of state student. And they still charge almost the same as CU for their out of state students. I went to CU out of state the first year and then in state the last 3 (due to parents moving to CO). The UCs are an outlier because California has an enormous economy, and they have over a dozen very reputable campuses. . The way my family finances were I would have been looking at $200,000 of student loans to go to CU, but only a few thousand to go to UT, which I did, and paid off my loan in less than a year of graduation. Public schools depend on public money, so they have to make sure resources are directed toward in-state kids first. I’m sure you’d love it at CU, but in the long-term you’d get way more out of your money if you stayed in-state. The first out of state year cost me more than my last 3 combined. The education at other state schools is also probably comparable. I got into CU Boulder (out of state) and UT Austin (in state). However, it’s important to consider that while tuition is astronomical, so is the price of living in boulder. I fell into that unhappy middle for undergrad.
